Does President Obama “Own The Debt-Ceiling Fiasco”? Nope.

A commenter wrote in to ask my opinion of Karl Rove’s article in The Wall Street Journal the other day, titled Obama Owns the Debt-Ceiling Fiasco.  The commenter, Randy, wrote that the article,

Seems spot on to me, but I am open to other perspectives.

Okay. Here is another perspective:

Randy,

I’m afraid I have to concur with HLG who said that,

Karl Rove is an amoral bald-faced-liar that even when he appears to be telling the truth (which he does so rarely), he still can’t be trusted.

Let me tell you what the Rove piece was designed to do: Tell Republicans to look like they’re fighting hard for a deal, go ahead and cave in at the last minute in some fashion, and the GOP and GOP outside support groups, flush with cash from anonymous donors, will see to it that the 2012 campaign is all about how Obama doesn’t care about the deficit because he is an “incompetent liberal,” à la Jimmy Carter.

Rove begins his piece, filled with little untruths, with this truth:

President Barack Obama and Congress face a mess if the federal government hits the debt ceiling Aug. 2.

In terms of truth-telling, it’s all downhill from there. He says that,

This would be a disaster with no political winners.

Oh, yes, there would be political winners, depending on what the House of Representatives does.  Mr. Obama, whatever you or Rove think of his sincerity, has made it clear to that small segment of the American people paying attention, that he has tried to reason with unreasonable Republicans. If this ship goes down, the culprits will be easily found, tried, and convicted.

You see, Randy, there will always be this fact left over, after all the smoke has blown away from any potential crisis: Republicans refused to take a $4 trillion debt-ceiling deal, filled mostly with budget cuts, in order not to raise taxes slightly on the wealthy of this country

That’s it, Randy. That is how Democrats will sell this thing next year, one way or the other.  If a crisis ensues, the sell job will be easy because most people already know that Republicans today exist to protect the moneyed class.

Indeed, the moneyed class has finally bought itself a political party, and Karl Rove is one of their spokesmen.  Which leads me to reveal the real reason Republicans like Rove and Mitch McConnell don’t want to take the generous offer Obama made them: It would instantly make President Obama look like he’s doing something big on the national debt, the GOP’s big wedge issue in 2012.

And for folks like Rove and McConnell, this is all about defeating Obama and gaining political power, not what is best for the country.

Duane

Duane, you addressed none of Rove’s substance. I agree with you that the Dems can easily make this look like Republicans are the bad guys. But, Rove points out WHY Republicans are doing what they are doing, and you did not address that at all. Well, you said they just want to beat Obama – but that has nothing to do with his battle, and it has nothing to do with what Rove said.

“Yet the $4 trillion in deficit reduction that Mr. Obama talks about is shy on details. No one who’s attended his frequent negotiating sessions knows what his proposal really is.”

It’s just talk. No true intent. He knows we can not accept it, so he just talks to score cheap political points.

“The president wants a $2.4 trillion debt-ceiling increase to get him past next year’s election—and the deal he’s proposing is based on promised future cuts paired with substantial tax increases on households earning more than $250,000 a year.”

FUTURE CUTS – and I’ve heard from other sources, those are all more than 3 years away!

250K – Not super wealthy corporate jet owners.

“The president has made a bipartisan agreement even more difficult by declaring certain spending off-limits to cuts. Mr. Obama’s “untouchable” list includes his $1 trillion health-care reform, $128 billion in unspent stimulus funds, education and training outlays, his $53 billion high-speed rail proposal, spending on “green” jobs and student loans, and virtually any structural changes to entitlements except further squeezing payments to doctors, hospitals and health-care professionals.”

Not only are the left wing extremists like you being dishonest about all of this Duane, but why is it that CNN and the rest of the main stream media don’t report these facts? You guys bash Fox all of the time, but Democrats own every other media outlet besides AM radio and Fox news.

Anyway, you are right, the Republicans are going to suffer for this because of the public will never get the full story of truth – they will only get the half truth that the Republicans would not accept the 4 trillion dollar deal because they did not want to raise taxes on billionaires. If the public got the whole truth – the cuts were years away and the increases were immediate on families earning 250K and up – if the public were told that, which side would win Duane? YOU KNOW WHICH SIDE. And it is frankly disgusting and abhorrent that you and others like you propagate this bull crap half truth in order for your party to look good and win elections. This is too important for that Duane. Look at your kids and do the right thing. Tell the whole truth. Help save our country.

So what you believe is that in two and a half years Obama created this entire mess. You are truly one naive young man. Most of the debt resulted from policies of the previous administration. In eight years George bush started:

    1 two wars
    2. gave a huge tax cut to the rich,
3.heralded the decimation a middle class tax base
    4. Was in office when the sub-prime meltdown began
5.which he responded to with the start of bailouts.

All of those things were in place before Obama and all of them are still contributing to the debt today, and guess who his senior Senior Advisor and chief of staff was. If you said Karl Rove then move to the front of the line. Rove is politically astute and stealthy but he is also completely amoral and untrustworthy at any level. He is as responsible as George Bush and Dick Cheney for our current crisis. It would be the same if a CEO and his lieutenants drove a corporation into bankruptcy and then as the “ships sinking, turn the helm” over to those moving into their position.

Karl Rove is the feeding trough from which FOX and Limbaugh feeds. He was a suspect in the “Valerie Plame Affair (or the CIA Leak Scandal)” for which he should have been charged and went to jail for. He is also considered to be the cause of the White House email scandal by keeping private communication outside of the White House. Rove knew that the president was to keep records “Presidential Record Act 1978.” Instead they chose to use a non-government email source which could have also resulted in national security issues, but better than the “weasels getting caught raiding the chicken house.”

If you want to be so gullible as to buy into all these right-wing myths then that’s your choice and one that you’ll have to live with, or you could liberate your mind and check out sources beyond the republican propaganda machine. Pay attention to experts in the given fields that you’re choosing debate on, verify your facts, weigh them against information from both sides, and then decide what’s most likely to be true. But if you’re going to enter into debates and the best sources that you have as debatable information is Karl Rove, Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, or any other right-wing politically slanted source, then I hope you’re prepared for a world of disillusion and disappointment.
