“I Cry Tears Of Blood”

Because it reveals so much about their character, I’m going to feature some of the comments made by conservatives after they were O-bombed last night.

First up is Ted Nugent, who said this spring that he would “either be dead or in jail this time next year,” if Obama were elected in November.  Well, it’s gonna be a long winter for Ted:

Subhuman varmint.” Didn’t Mittens go hunting for those once?

In any case, Ted obviously is a master of the English language and pithily captured for us the essence of Romney’s “47%” speech:

Pimps whores & welfare brats & their soulless supporters hav a president to destroy America

Obama destroying America—a constant theme before the election—seems to be  a popular post-election favorite among celebrity conservatives, if you can still call born-gain Christian Victoria Jackson, of Saturday Night Live fame, a celebrity:

I hate it when they turn on their own, don’t you? What would Jesus do after an election loss? I guess he’d be disgusted.

And who among us figured Donald Trump for a revolutionary buffoon? Not me, but:

Before any of you grab your Molotov cocktails and go huntin’ for the Founding Father who thunk up the electoral college, you should know that Trump has deleted these comments from his Twitter account.

That was a short revolution!

  1. Of course, Trump is the consummate coward. Can’t we petition NBC to take him off the air — in the interest of national security and/or good taste?

I for one am tired and ecstatic (yes I was up all night) even though I knew that Obama’s win would be called early, or as pundits put it, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin all in the right timezones to end a long night. I knew that Obama was going to take Florida because we all worked hard so to see that it happened. I also expected that we would take Ohio and probably Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, but I was stunned that all the key states fell into his court. There are a lot of dissatisfied republicans now dealing with an electoral hangover completely oblivious to the fact that they and their families also won. Obama Care finally has a chance to mature and the tax cuts for the rich will be allowed to expire. It’s step forward! HLG

Congratulations on your state! Thanks for all the hard work you and others did to make sure it happened. Unbelievable ground game there. And, yes, whether they know it or not, Republicans are winners too. Forward, indeed!

I watched Mr. Rove spin off on FOX. I came home from work about 9:45pm, me and my bowl of cereal watched as Rove went nuts on FOX….and to my shock they called it for Obama first. Why, goodness me, I dropped my spoon.

Seriously I’ve not stopped laughing all day. The R’s at work were pissed off. I mean, they’re mad…and I’m laughing still.

Don’t anyone DARE tell them what they did wrong. Shhhh. Hint: Akin, abortion, self deport. God they’re stupid.

“Conservatives are not by definition racists.”

Correct, conservatives are racist by their actions.

    ” Conservatives should welcome immigration.”

Again true except for color discrimination.

“Does being a political conservative require that you are also a religious conservative?”

Again true except that the religious right now controls the republican party which forces any republican candidate to buy into the Jesus game or quit. The Massachusetts Romney would’ve won this election, but he bowed to the political conservatives and lost. Romney was screwed from the start because he couldn’t be both moderate and a religious extremist at the same time. The one thing that he could be is the insensitive pathological liar that he is.

“The war on homosexuals is over.”

Yes but that won’t fly with evangelical republicans, trust me I used to be one.

I really enjoyed your post and agreed with most of it, but neoconservatives are at best a disparate collection of conservatives tied only by the word republican and the color white.

You are missing my point, whether intentionally or not. You are using the term “conservative” as a pejorative, describing the very people I am telling conservatives to avoid, including “neocons” and evangelicals. Classic conservatives of the Barry Goldwater and William F. Buckley, Jr. persuasion may be wrong about most things, but they are not by definition racists and homophobes. Nothing in the conservative political philosophy requires that; in fact, it goes against the grain. I speak as one who, like our host, once considered himself a conservative. I was not an evangelical, however, which may be where our disagreement lies. I have always been an atheist. Religious fanatics exist outside the standard “anarchist-liberal-moderate-conservative-libertarian” scale. I am not, btw, suggesting that people like Limbaugh change their beliefs. I’m suggesting they be drummed out of the Party and sent off to join the rest of the members of the dark side of the force, out in the wilderness!

    • HLG,

I used to think that the a moderate Massachusetts Romney would have won. But I’m not so sure. He was never a genuine anything, whether it be liberal, moderate, or conservative. People tend to see through that. And he would not have gotten as much of the evangelical and Tea Party vote in a national election. I think that Obama would have won against just about any Republican this year, which is why most of the competent ones didn’t get in.

The only thing that kept his numbers down was a well-funded slander campaign by Rove and other outside groups.

No I got your point. I was describing conservatives in the context of the modern republican party, “Barry Goldwater and William F. Buckley, Jr.” are not neoconservatives either. I admire many of the attributes of the “old republican” party, but that party no longer exists. The republican party has fallen to a political insurgency of religious extremist and powerful amoral business interests. It’s a party without a philosophy and doomed to obsolescence just as the Federalist were doomed when Jefferson was elected.

“Nothing in the conservative political philosophy requires that; in fact, it goes against the grain.”

Conservative philosophy is whatever the republicans say it is because otherwise they have no philosophy. Conservatives talk about the teachings of Jesus but hold those of Ayn Rand next their scriptures.

” I have always been an atheist.”

    I’m also an atheist!

“”Religious fanatics exist outside the standard “anarchist-liberal-moderate-conservative-libertarian” ” Religion has caused more misery to humanity than any other cause.

” I am not, btw, suggesting that people like Limbaugh change their beliefs. I’m suggesting they be drummed out of the Party and sent off to join the rest of the members of the dark side of the force, out in the wilderness!”

Smart conservatives might want to consider becoming democrats since we are much closer to the Eisenhower republican than any modern conservative. You don’t have to save the republican party because the word republican is just a word and what’s conservative is relative. Democrats are the closest thing there is to the conservatives that you’re looking for. You have no chance of drumming right-wing fanatics such as Limbaugh out of the party, because they’ve already drummed the “Goldwater’s and Buckley’s” out. Too much money and no empathy leaves the republican party soulless.

I don’t think it would do the Democratic Party any good to have a sudden influx of conservatives who are Republican “moderates,” since they don’t really share the same basic core values as liberals. They either need to take back the Republican Party from the fringies, or form their own new party and take the time to build it up. But I think you’re still having a problem with the definition of “conservative.” As a former conservative (and I’m sure Duane can testify to this, as well), I can tell you that there is actually a conservative philosophy whose definition does not change over time and that is NOT racist, sexist, ultra-religious or reactionary. The people currently controlling the Republican Party are not conservatives, and just because they say they are doesn’t mean it’s reasonable to say that all conservatives “talk about the teachings of Jesus but hold those of Ayn Rand next their scriptures.” That’s the description of a person with mental problems! Please understand that I don’t agree with traditional conservatives, but I don’t think they deserve to be pilloried because their label has been stolen by a bunch of know-nothing butt-heads.

      • ” But I think you’re still having a problem with the definition of “conservative.”

No, I fully understand the definition of conservative but where we disagree is the context in which its used. It’s a matter of semantics. For example as an adjective “Resistant to change,” or as a noun “A person who is reluctant to accept changes and new ideas.” Like you also grew up in a conservative family but I turned away from conservative ideology a long time ago.

When I think of a true conservative, I think of those such as Joe Scarborough, but there’s no room for them in the modern neoconservative party. There was a time when many democrats were racists and owned the south, but the democrat backing of the civil rights movement sent many of them such as Strom Thurmond scurrying to the republican party. If the “Massachusetts Romney” had run with like minded republicans he probably would’ve won but the wacko element now has most of the power.

Some people voted democrat because they truly support Obama’s policies while others supported democrats out of fear of republican policies. Either way it worked in spite of abundant corporate financial support, redistricting, and attempts voter suppression by republican governors.

Good luck with rebuilding the party.

I don’t want to rebuild the Party. I’m a Democrat! I’m just telling conservatives what they SHOULD do, as opposed to trying to make their own third party. You reference the “neoconservative party.” There is no such thing. There are neocons, who currently have a lot of power within the Republican Party, and then there are Republicans, but they are not one and the same. What I am trying to do here is to draw a distinction between saying that the traditional conservatives (a political description, not one that means “resistant to change”) should take back the party, and what a lot of pundits are saying, which is that those who have been espousing racism and sexism should stop saying that and lie to the voters the way that Romney did. Those are two different things. Look at history: The Southern Democrats were remnants of the old Democratic Party, which was hard right racist and supported secession. Would you have said that there was no room for FDR in the racist Dixiecrat Party? The liberals still managed to take it over, and if you look at an electoral map of 1928, four years before FDR’s election, you’ll see how impossible that looked. http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/showelection.php?year=1928 (This is a really interesting site, by the way, if you want to compare electoral maps for every year. If you really want to see how things have flipped, compare 1908 with 2012!)

          • I have a friend and sometime collaborator here in the Midwest, a remarkable photographer. She and her husband built a beautiful home here about 15 years ago on the wet side of town, near a lake. Let’s say — depending on where you live — the home would have been worth a couple of million in San Francisco, 750K in Austin, a million four in Chicago. Anyway — a nice house. The family left for a couple weeks of vacation about a year after the house was completed and while everyone was away a freakish leak in the basement led to the house to be infected with a particularly stubborn strain of mold. For three years they tried a variety of solutions to destroy the mold. Nothing worked. the house was unsafe. They tore it down, all 6500 square feet of it, and built a new house. The Republican Party as it was built a century and a half ago has been infected with the destructive mold of ignorance, plutocracy, neoracism, warmongers, and religious nuts. The is no way to purge all of those ills and still have vibrant party. From the rubble there should spring a dedicated Conservative Party and an undistracted Libertarian Party. The GOP is decaying — slowly and painfully. It’s time to die.

            Good luck with that.

“neoconservative party.” There is no such thing.”

Actually that’s exactly that’s a perfect description. The old republican party has faded and the new (hence neo) conservative party is now in control. “Neocons” aren’t just members of power within they completely control the republican party.

“What I am trying to do here is to draw a distinction between saying that the traditional conservatives (a political description, not one that means “resistant to change”) should take back the party”

The problem is that there are no conservatives out there to take back the party, the party has been routed from within. When John McCain and Mitt Romney get reeled in to extremist philosophies, “hook line and sinker,” then who is really left to pull the party back from the edge? Democrats are also experiencing philosophical change with the rise of progressives of which I’m one.

” Would you have said that there was no room for FDR in the racist Dixiecrat
            Party? ”

Yes if FDR was running for president today in the face of modern technology. Things were different in FDR’s day because the world was a lot less connected. Some republicans once were liberals such as Richard Nixon, but republicans purged them just as democrats are purging conservatives. Chris Christie will likely find himself in the out crowd for his performance with Obama during Hurricane Sandy. Who really is there to lead the republican party out of the desert?

I’ll add your link to my collection of links thanks!

Thanks for adding the link. We will see if the Christie/Jeb Bush wing manages to take back the Party in the coming years or not. It will be up to the primary voters, actually, and also what happens in the 2014 elections. The Dems only need to gain 15 seats next time, which would deal another blow to the Tea Party’s power. I don’t really care one way or the other, but as a politics geek and a former conservative, it’s an interesting thing to watch. I hope I’m still around to see what happens!
