    We have taken abortion out of the back alleys and moved them into the ghetto of clinics. Now it is time to take this legal procedure into the hospitals where all other legal medical procedures are performed. Especially in southern states like Missouri, Mississippi, Alabama, where the Right to Birth people are destroying this right by closing clinics, legislators need to legislate that hospitals must perform all legal medical procedures. Will Missouri legislators make such a proposal?

      Helen,

      I’m afraid that here in Missouri our legislature has been thoroughly captured by right-wingers, many of them anti-choice zealots. There is a veto-proof majority now in both houses, so the fact that we still have a Democratic governor doesn’t mean as much as it used to. I said all that to tell you that there isn’t the slightest chance that we will make any progress on reproductive rights in this state.

      There is a 24-hour waiting period here, and women on Medicaid will have to pay for an abortion themselves, unless they can prove they are a victim of rape or incest or if they can prove giving birth will possibly kill them. Additionally, health care providers, including hospitals, don’t even have to give women information about abortion or where they can get one, much less perform one.

      Oh, yeah. If you are seventeen (or younger) and find yourself pregnant in Missouri, abortion is not an option unless you can get a parent’s consent or the consent of a judge.

      Sadly, things will likely get worse for women in this state this year and the next.

        hrmmmmmph. Personally, I think a teenager should be required to have a parent’s consent
        to have a baby. No consent, abortion required. Well, ok, maybe I’m going a little far here, but surely having a baby is a more consequential act than having an abortion.

          Helen,

          While it wouldn’t behoove a free society to force any woman to have an abortion (not to mention the morality of it), you are right to notice that generally “having a baby is a more consequential act than having an abortion.”

          Thus, the emphasis on seeking permission for abortion seems to be misplaced.
