More Bernie Buts

My fellow Democrats. Get used to it. Stop kidding yourselves. There will always be a “but” with Bernie. He’s not one of us.

He likes the Democratic Party, but. He likes Obama, but. He will support Hillary Clinton, but. He condemns the nastiness in Nevada, but.

It is clear that Bernie is not in this thing to be president anymore. He’s not in this to win the nomination—for him to continue to say he is amounts to defrauding his donors—and at this point he isn’t in it to defeat Drumpf. He’s in it because he first wants to destroy the Democratic Party as it now is and then become the leader of a revamped party, a party created in his image. That’s it. That’s what he’s doing.

Last night in California, at another big rally, he attacked Democratic leaders. The crowd booed those leaders. Bernie’s okay with that. He doesn’t care. Just like, at first, he didn’t much care that some of his supporters went wild in Nevada, that some of them threatened the chairwoman—a volunteer—of the state Democratic Party. He eventually put out a statement condemning what happened, but it came with a patented Bernie-but.

Last night, after all that had happened in Nevada over the weekend, where his supporters were furious at the “establishment,” Bernie sent out this tweet:

Yes, Democrats are Bernie’s enemy. He’s running against Democrats. He literally loathes the party. So, why would we expect him to enthusiastically embrace it after this is all over? The most we will get from him, after Hillary Clinton wins the nomination and after he conducts a nasty fight at the convention over the party platform, will be a lukewarm endorsement of her—largely on the grounds that a Drumpf is unacceptable. That will be it.

It’s sad, but that is what it is.

Here’s Wonkette on Bernie’s non-condemnation of violence and death threats:

He’s a piece of shit. There’s no getting around it any longer.

So, journalists have talked to some of the people who sent harassing messages:

The funny thing is, I’m seeing more Bernie supporters denying that any harassment (which the Democrats totally had coming) could actually have come from Bernie supporters, and any claims to the contrary are evidence of a vast Hillary conspiracy against them.

I don’t mind repeating myself: Bernie is a piece of shit for letting this go on. While he can’t actually force anyone to stop doing what they’re doing, he can and sure as hell should take an unambiguous stand against it.

      • I have to admit, I overestimated Bernie’s decency. Maybe it’s the crowds, maybe it’s the young folks who have energized him so much that he has lost his common sense. I don’t know. I do know that a quick and simple declaration from the lips of Sanders would have helped. And a longer lecture to his followers—since Bernie loves lectures—about civility should have come the next day. But nope. Just more invective against the party. Sad shit.

Myself, I had questions about Bernie’s basic decency as of a year ago. Dude has been in Congress for 25 years, he saw the Republicans decline into their current state of unthinking obstruction, and still he makes like Obama simply isn’t trying hard enough.

You’ve been deeply involved in unions, so you know there are some things unions can do and other things they simply don’t have the power to do — for example, deciding who gets a promotion within the company. Now imagine a union member running for a leadership position, claiming to be able to pick the promotions, and accusing the current leaders of being unwilling to promote the right people. Would that guy be a colossal asshole who, whatever his specific motives, can only cause harm with his false promises?

          • No doubt. I hate to say it, but Bernie has turned into an asshole. Whether he’s a colossal asshole remains to be seen. He’s got less than a month to redeem what’s left of his reputation. And I’m sure what Hillary said today (she asserted that she will definitely be the nominee) will just set him off again.
