Here is the way HuffPo headlined Speaker Paul Ryan’s criticism of Drumpf’s racist remarks about a federal judge:
Here is part of what Ryan said:
Claiming a person can’t do their job because of their race is sort of like the textbook definition of a racist comment. I think that should be absolutely disavowed. It’s absolutely unacceptable.
“Absolutely unacceptable.” Drumpf hasn’t “disavowed” his racist comment—and never will. Why should he? Ryan and other Republicans are still voting for Drumpf and supporting him as his party’s nominee whether Drumpf disavows his comment or triples down on it (he’s already doubled-down). Thus, “absolutely” doesn’t mean absolutely. And “unacceptable” doesn’t’ mean, uh, unacceptable. Thus, HuffPo got the headline wrong. It should have been:

/ June 7, 2016Duane: Every day in every way Trump seems able to validate George Orwell, with the willing, often eager, cooperation of his fellow Republicans, if he is indeed a Republican. I am constantly in awe of their ability to refer to Trump in such vile terms that would be out of place even in a Marine Corps squad bay and then to say in absolute sincerity “But of course I’ll vote for him.”
But most amazing of all is what inevitably follows this declaration of loyalty: “Because we must elect a Republican in order to maintain our principles, those Republican principles that made America great!”
The word “principles” in the context of the earlier comments is about as inappropriate as their candidate’s mocking of the disabled, his boorish attacks on women, or his shameful belittling of a genuine American hero. (But let us not forget that Trump survived the Battle of the Cafeteria in the War of Military School. Hoorah.). God bless America!

How right you are. I don’t know what has been more amazing to watch, in terms of the sheer farcity [sic] of it all: Drumpf’s performance or the performance of those Republicans trying to make a meaningless distinction between “supporting” him and “endorsing” him (I’m talking to you, Paul Ryan) or those trying to “guide” him into political sanity (I’m talking to you, Bob Corker).
As far as Drumpf being a Republican, it doesn’t matter anymore whether he was one before this all started. He is the face of the party now. Republicans like Paul Ryan evidently think they can turn him into their kind of Republican, one who will buy into their “agenda” and sign on to their most cherished policy goals. I don’t know if that is true, but it might be. His mind is not tethered to anything of substance, so it is not a stretch to think he can be manipulated by professional politicians, when it comes to legislation favored by the majority of House Republicans. I will write about that more in the future, but suffice it to say that it isn’t enough that our side simply make the case he is unfit for the office, temperamentally and otherwise. We have to make the case that should he cozy up to the Paul Ryans and Mitch McConnells in Congress—which is the only way he can survive at this point—bad things will happen that have nothing to do with his temperament.

/ June 8, 2016I offer this challenge to the Republican Party: If Donald Trump can produce a valid, legitimate birth certificate showing Obama was born in Kenya, then I will vote for Trump. If Trump cannot produce such a document, then the Republican Party must concede the election to Hilary Rodham Clinton.
