Tonight, Wednesday, June 22, 2016, it continues—
The Democratic Party’s historic “sit-in” in the House of Representatives over the gun issue that plagues the country. Here is an image from MSNBC’s “All In With Chris Hayes” late Wednesday evening:
Giving words to that image, Elijah Cummings, congressman from a gun violence-infected district in Maryland, said,
It would be legislative malpractice not to deal with these issues.
Amen. And with the support of President Obama, Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren, among others, the Democratic Party is presenting to the county a stark choice: side with sanity on guns or side with NRA-blessed anarchy.
Couldn’t be prouder to be a Democrat tonight.

/ June 22, 2016“Green paper is more valuable than red blood” is an affirmation of the fact that having more money does not mean winning. This also shows that it doesn’t matter how intractable the problem is.

/ June 23, 2016Well, right now the other side is winning. But I don’t think it is all about the money. It is about votes. The NRA’s campaign donations aren’t that big a deal to some of those GOP lawmakers. It’s what the NRA can do to them in a primary. They can fund a challenger and make it harder to hold on to a House or Senate seat. And ultimately, it is their seats the lawmakers cherish most. Many of them would abandon the extremism of the NRA in a heartbeat if it meant holding on to their power.

/ June 23, 2016Yes, it is about time. Now all Dems have to do is stick with it until they get the votes they want. After that, it will be up to the people to decide what kind of representative they want in Congress.

/ June 23, 2016I won’t begrudge your being proud of the Democrats now, but I’m proud of them pretty often, fighting the good fight for no reward other than the backbiting of the perpetually dissatisfied.
A sit-in is an effective attention-getter right now in ways it wouldn’t have been a decade ago: too many big incidents have happened and the public is starting to get behind doing something about guns, and even if this sit-in is mostly symbolic, it matters because the traditional NRA song-and-dance isn’t working like it used to. So, kudos to the Democrats for correctly gauging that now is a good time to be forthright about sensible gun legislation.

/ June 24, 2016I am a Democrat. I’m a liberal. And I’m mostly always proud to be a Democrat and a liberal. I, too, have a problem with the “perpetually dissatisfied” on our side, but my problem with them is in how they understand the dynamics of politics. I don’t mind people fighting for certain ideas and wanting to fashion the Democratic Party in ways that they think it should be fashioned. But once an election cycle has come, once the fight for the nomination is over, it is time to unite. Those perpetually dissatisfied folks aren’t much into uniting. Bernie Sanders, as I suggested in a post today, is on the verge of being one of those perpetually dissatisfied people, if he doesn’t come out and endorse Hillary very soon and tell his wayward voters to get behind her. Will he do that? The idea that we really don’t know is what bothers me. It’s been almost three weeks since Hillary finally and officially (officially enough) handed him his ass. Still he is asking for money and vowing to fight all the way to the convention and amass more delegates. Jesus.

/ June 25, 2016History is not going to be kind to Bernie. Best case scenario, he will be remembered only briefly as the guy who, after making a big splash with the young, turned out to be a yuge scam artist. Worst case scenario: he will be a cautionary tale for a very long time as the guy who gave us President Trump.

/ June 28, 2016I obviously hope your worst case scenario proves to be imaginative. And I think it is too much to say he is a “scam artist.” Bernie is an ideologue through and through, truly believing in the product he is trying to sell. If a man selling a magic potion really believes in magic and believes in the potion, then what he is is delusionary. My biggest problem with Bernie is that he is infecting others with his uncompromising delusions.
